When she wakes, the gryphons she has spent her life serving are under attack in their nests. Mothers protecting their young. When the gryphon, whose nest she was asleep in, is killed defening her chicks, Neri makes the only decision she can; she grabs the chicks and eggs that she can, and escapes the coup.
Where can she go? She knows no home but the servants quarers, no land by this unfamiliar strangers territory, and she's got three chicks and two eggs in tow. Make that five chicks.
Beset on all sides, hunted by all players, Neri makes the decision to seek the gryphons' home before she tries to find her own people. The chicks need their kind, as much as she needs her people.
But there are forces at play she doesn't yet understand. Her people, the gryphons, and a force more dangerous than both, are all tied together. If she can just make it to the mountains. If she can just keep them alive. If she can just fight the feeling that something bigger, more powerful, and more dangerous, than anything she's ever known, is walking beside her. . . . maybe she'll survive.
